Celfocus Pilots Blockchain Platform to Help Companies Reduce Their Carbon Footprint
Recently, Marco Carvalho, Blockchain Lead at Celfocus, spoke to Dinheiro Vivo (a Portuguese newspaper) about our latest initiative to support companies in reducing their carbon footprint through blockchain technology.

To effectively reduce their carbon footprint, companies must be able to measure it, monitor its progress, and make informed decisions that have a concrete impact. This is precisely what Celfocus aim to achieve with our new platform, leveraging blockchain technology to ensure data transparency and integrity.

“We started focusing on sustainability because we believe that fostering accountability is crucial, not just for individuals but also for companies,” explained Marco Carvalho to Dinheiro Vivo.

“Our goal is to help companies understand and measure their carbon footprints. This means gathering data effectively, practically, and as automated as possible.” The use of blockchain ensures that the data remains immutable, giving confidence to all stakeholders that the factors contributing to a particular carbon footprint are accurately represented.

This solution, which is being developed under the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP), is still in its testing phase.

One of the first pilot projects was launched with the Fundão City Council, which has supported the project from the outset. We are also working with other companies to explore how the platform can best serve market needs.

“We’ve received significant input, and there are numerous partners and clients who see value in this solution since carbon accounting can be challenging to navigate,” said Marco Carvalho to Dinheiro Vivo. Measurement is just one part of the process. “Once companies understand their footprint and have the relevant data, the next step is taking action.”

Reducing the footprint also depends on the type of business and sector. “The nature of a company will always limit the extent of the efforts that can be made towards reduction,” emphasised Marco.

Another component is footprint compensation, which can be achieved through carbon credits.

“We can assist companies that invest in projects such as reforestation by creating these carbon credits,” said Marco. Blockchain technology helps ensure transparency in certifying the accuracy of these calculations.

“Additionally, other technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence, will be applied to calculate the best reduction methods automatically. This is one of the components we believe will genuinely make a difference in helping companies become greener.”

With two projects being developed under the PRR, totaling approximately five million euros, we aim to have these solutions fully operational by the end of next year.
